Autumn Newsletter 2009

Welcome to you all after a long summer break. We hope the children are all ready to start the autumn term and eager to try all the exciting new activities we have planned for them.

Firstly let me introduce our new members of staff to the Nursery Team, we have Mrs. Peters, Miss. Holmes and Mr. Devereux. Please feel happy to approach any member of our team if you have any queries or suggestions about anything in Nursery.

We will be working outdoors as much as possible so appropriate clothing for the weather conditions is a must. We will provide wellingtons for our muddier activities but if you have a pair at home that can be brought into school and left on your child's peg we would be very grateful.

We will have PE sessions in the sports hall on three mornings. Please ensure that all earrings are removed and avoid putting tights on girls on these days, as it helps them when taking their socks and shoes off.

We ask for £2.00 each term for baking money, from each child and this can be sent into Nursery as soon as possible.

Over the next week we will be sending home storybooks for you to share with your child. Each time you read to your child or share a story your child will receive a Reading Mile stamp leading up to a certificate for 25, 50, 75 and 100 miles. This is our way of encouraging children to look at books and enjoy story time with an adult. Also we will be sending home math's based activities for the children to complete at home, all based around fun and games encouraging the children to count, recognize colours, shapes and numbers in the environment. Each time you complete a simple task or activity, please initial the Number Stars booklet to earn your child prizes and certificates.

Each Thursday we will hold a colour day when we ask the children to come dressed in the colour of the week. This is to help them learn their colours in a fun way. The colour of the week will be displayed on the notice board outside Nursery every Monday to give you plenty of time to find something for your child to wear. It can be as simple as a pair of socks, ribbon, T-shirt or dressed completely in that weeks colour.

This term we have are inviting parents and carers into school on a Wednesday afternoon 3.15 until 3.45pm to look at your children's work and to join them in their favourite place in the nursery. Hopefully this will help you understand some of the activities that are taking place whilst your child is with us. Also we have extended our Toddlers sessions to Monday, Wednesday and Thursday morning at 9.00 until 10.00am. Please do come along and bring a friend and their toddlers. All Welcome.

Now your child is entitled to 15 hours a week of free nursery education if you want to extend your child's time in nursery and include some additional paid sessions please do speak to either myself or Mrs. Long. A full week in Nursery costs only £25 a week. All fees must be paid weekly at the office in a named envelope stating child's name and amount enclosed.

If your child is staying at Nursery for any lunch time sessions we encourage them to eat a healthy balanced diet so please do not send any sweets, chocolate bars or fizzy pop. We have Healthy Lunch leaflets available in Nursery for ideas - if you would like one please ask.

If you have any queries or questions please come and see us at the end or beginning of the Nursery sessions. Yours sincerely

Debbie Smith and Gemma Long

Nursery’s Visit to the Dock Museum

The Nursery children went to the Dock Museum with Mrs. Smith, Miss. Johnson and many adult helpers.

Minibus rideWe went in two different mini buses. Mrs. Kent kindly drove one. She was fantastic and we want to say a big Thank You for driving us there.

We spent a little time going around the Museum with Graham. He knew many Dock Museum Visitinteresting facts about how people in Barrow made the boats, even before we were born.

Then we went into a big room full of fun activities for us to do.

We could play in the water with all the Pretending to be boat buildersdifferent sea creatures.

We could dress up and pretend to be a boat builder just like the people in BAE Systems today.

We could paint any sea picture that we wanted Playing at the Dock Museumto onto huge sheets of paper.

Some people who were feeling noisy chose to play the instruments and sing sea songs, such as “Row, row, row your boat”.

We wrote messages and put them into bottles.
PlayingA few days later Mrs. Cooper took one to Scotland and threw it off Helensborough Pier. Amazingly, a teacher found it and her children in Scotland are going to write to us in Barrow. We cannot wait to get the letters then we can write back.

Dock museumWe had a great time and want to say Thanks to everyone that helped us.
