Year Six

Welcome to the Year 6 Class Page.

Summer term newsletter

Dear Parents,

Welcome back, I hope you all had an enjoyable Easter holiday and everyone is refreshed, ready for an important term, in Year 6.  I would just like to take this opportunity to explain what your child will be doing during the term ahead and provide you with some information about the SATs, homework, after school clubs and trips.

As you know, the children will be taking their SATs exams during this half term. They will begin on Monday May 12th and will last one week. This makes this a very important but stressful time for them. To reduce this stress and to prepare them for these tests we will be spending time revising and practising for them throughout the coming weeks.  It is also important that all the children continue to do as much as they can to help themselves at home, by reading as much as possible, revising the work we do in class and learning their times tables at any opportunity they have. We have a final year student, Miss Hool,  joining us in year 6 starting on the 14th April and I know both her and the children will enjoy the experience.

Lessons
During this term we will study:
Geography; Mountains and a study on our surrounding area,
P.E; Cricket and athletics,
R.E; Pilgrimages,
D&T; Moving vehicles and shelters,
Music; Stars hide your face and Who knows,
Art; What a performance,
ICT; Control and monitoring.

Homework

Your child will be receiving a small amount of homework each night, which will be handed in the following day as the children feel this was the best way for them.  Homework will be given on the following nights and should last no longer than 20 minutes:
Monday – Spellings
Tuesday – Literacy
Wednesday – Numeracy
Thursday – Science
Friday – Spelling/Times Tables revision ready for testing on Monday.

As well as the homework given every day each child needs to try and read for at least 10 minutes each night, which should be recorded in their home reading record, and spend some time revising and learning their x tables.

After School Clubs

There will continue to be a variety of clubs run after school, which I hope your child will make full use of.  As well as the usual clubs the Maths booster session on Tuesdays for Year 6 will continue until the SATs are finished. After the SATs there will be cricket and athletics added to the list of activities. There will also be one covering letter at the start of each club to give permission for your child to take part. Any games outside the school grounds will require a separate permission slip, which will be given at the time.

School Trips

We hope to take the children on  a trip to farm where your child will be able to see how the farm works and participate in a number of activities throughout the day. This is an excellent opportunity as both the activities and the transport are provided free of charge.

Yours sincerely

Mr Coulston
