About St George's C of E School

St Cuthberts ChurchWe are an average sized school with currently 174 children on role plus a busy Nursery.  The school is housed in three separate buildings, one of which houses the Reception Class, Year 1 and Year 2.  Another building houses the Nursery and our new sports and arts extension.  The third building, which is actually one of the oldest in Barrow, houses the four KS2 classes, The Snug, the library, the school kitchen/dining room, a recently refurbished computer suite, staff room and offices.

St GeorgesThe approach used is based around our evaluations of how we think we are doing, then the Inspection team come and see if they agree.  Our most recent OFSTED report (2007) stated that we are ‘a good school with many outstanding features’.

We all work very hard to ensure our children receive the best they can and give the best they can.  Teaching and guiding young people in this complex world to be good, Christian children who can make a positive contribution to their community is hard work, but OFSTED felt in this area of school we were outstanding.

Our most recent church OFSTED from the Diocese described the distinctiveness and effectiveness of St George’s as a Church of England school are outstanding.

‘The Christian ethos is embedded extremely well in this school. It successfully nurtures pupils and their families from a wide variety of backgrounds. Children are at the heart of the school and their well-being is foremost in everything that the school does. Each individual receives the support and understanding they need. They are helped extremely well to flourish and to develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally.   The school is welcoming and extremely valuable contributions are made by all staff, governors, “friends of the school” and clergy who work closely together. ‘

‘The leadership and commitment of the headteacher, staff, and clergy are very effective in ensuring that pupils thrive within a shared Christian vision, evident in all aspects of school life. ‘

‘No stone is left unturned in this school to ensure that each pupil is guided and supported according to their individual and collective needs.’
